Workshop and Support Groups

Our Workshops and on-going Support Groups meet regularly - currently at a variety of London locations – and everyone is welcome to attend. They are facilitated by a qualified and experienced therapist (see below) who, like us, loves someone in psychosis and ensures that everyone is heard in a safe and confidential environment. We hope to extend these to other areas as new groups are created.

What Happens at the Workshop and On-going Groups?

The one day Workshop is an intensive experience which offers the opportunity to tell our stories and to share our experiences of caring for someone in psychosis.  The on-going weekly Support Groups offer continuing weekly support for 6 weeks and are an opportunity to consider the impact on us of caring for someone with psychosis.  We need to acknowledge the pain, the shame, the grief and the guilt and find ways to support each other and our loved-ones. Just as in other successful support groups, like AA, it is not the medical profession that eases the emotional pain.

We aim to:

  • Help deal with the long term despair and psychological trauma that loving someone in an altered state of reality brings.  The person you once knew is often no longer under the control of their previous personality and is in a reality that we cannot enter.
  • Help deal with the shame that the stigma of psychosis brings. Psychosis is the new leprosy, the ultimate taboo.
Finding kindred spirits can help to reduce feelings of isolation and alienation.
  • Help deal with the anger and powerlessness at the interpretation of the mental health system which often leaves patient suffering until they reach crisis point.  To bind and bond together by finding a voice that will turn our position from powerlessness to that of the expert; not an expert professional, but an expert with a living beating heart that is bonded through love to the person suffering from psychosis.

Qualified and Experienced Therapist

The Workshops and On-going Support Groups are facilitated by Janet C Love, Family Constellation Therapist, Transpersonal Psychotherapist, UKCP and MBACP, and Autogenic Therapist, dip AT and author of ‘Psychosis in the Family: The Journey of a Psychotherapist and Mother’.

When and Where?

Our next Support Groups will meet on Monday 6th, 13th and 20th July from 7 - 9pm at Crypt Room 1, St Mary's Church Community Centre, Upper Street, N1 2TX.  Anyone is welcome to drop into any of these support groups, as these groups are just to offer a taste of the workshops to come.  A small donation would be appreciated.

Our next Workshops will be on Saturday 14th November, from 10am until 5pm at CCPE, Beauchamp Lodge, 2 Warwick Crescent, London, W2 6NE.   Following the Workshop, there will be a series of On-going Support Group Meetings to complete the Workshop. Please register to be kept informed about future Workshops and On-going Support Group Meetings.

Cost

As a charity, we subsidise the cost of the Workshop and On-going Support Groups.  We can offer the One Day Intensive Workshop and the on-going weekly Support Groups for £75.00.  We can offer some concessions but would ask that, those who can, donate to support the work of LSIP.

How can I apply to join a Workshop and On-going Support Group?

For optimum results, we have found that we need to limit numbers attending and places fill up quickly, so please register for the Workshop by completing the application form (link to application form) and send it to us at LSIP c/o 5th Floor Barnards Inn, 86 Fetter Lane,London EC1A 1AD, together with your cheque for £75 made out to ‘Loving Someone in Psychosis’.
